Neurocognitive Disorders Flashcards
definition of neurocognitive disorder
acquired primary clinical deficit in cognitive function
cognitive component of Mental Status Exam
attention, awareness (Ox3), memory, complex functions, abstract thought
delirium
disturbance in attention and awareness, waxing/waning, develops acutely from direct physiological consequence (trauma, drugs, disease process); children and elderly, ICU
major neurocognitive disorder
significant decline in 1+ cognitive domains, interferes with independent activities of daily life
minor neurocognitive disorder
modest decline in 1+ cognitive domains, does not interfere with independent activities of daily life, requires compensatory strategies
prevalence
major neurocognitive disorder= 1-2% 65 y/o
minor neurocognitive disorder= 2-10% 65 y/o
etiology
dementia (Alzheimers, Parkinsons, CV disease); traumatic brain injury, HIV
course
NCD due to neurodegenerative disease = insiduous onset, gradual decline
NCD due to CV disease= stepwise decline
NCD due to traumatic brain injury= acute change
indication of mental disorder due to another medical condition
initial onset >40 y/o; inconsistent with usual presentation; abnormal neurological exam
