bipolar I disorder
mania, severe impairment of >1 week OR hospitalization, or possible psychotic symptoms (mood congruent= grandiose or paranoid; mood incongruent)
bipolar II disorder
hypomania, change in function >4 consecutive days, no hospitalization, no psychotic symptoms
epidemiology
onset in the 20s, 2% prevalence (no difference in genders), GENETIC RISK
cyclothymic disorder
symptoms of hypomania and dysthymia
course of bipolar disorder
lifelong, episodic with euthymia in-between
decreased cycle length with age
rapid cycling phase= 4 episodes in 12m
treatment
mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, ECT AVOID ANTIDEPRESSANTS (trigger mania)
schizoaffective disorder
major depressive or manic episode concurrent with active-phase schizophrenia, delusions/hallucinations need to be present for >2 weeks without depression/mania
