Displacement = transferring avoided ideas and feelings to a neutral person or object = yelling at kids cuz boss yelled at you earlier
Projection = Attributing an unacceptable internal impulse to an external source = man who wants another woman thinks his wife is cheating on him
Fixation vs. Regression
Fixation = partially remaining at a more childish level of development = adult fixating on video games
Regression = Turning back maturation clock = bedwetting in a previously potty trained child
Repression vs. suppression
Repression = involuntarily withholding an idea or feeling from conscious awareness (immature defense) = not remembering being abused
Suppression = intentionally withholding an idea from conscious awareness = choosing not to worry about big game until time to play
