Proteins Flashcards
Describe the formation of a peptide bond
Carboxylic acid condenses with amino group with release of water
What is primary structure?
Amino acid sequence
What is secondary structure?
Alpha helix or beta pleated sheets
What is tertiary structure?
3D structure formed by assembly of secondary structure
What is quaternary structure?
Structure formed by more than one polypeptide chains
What are the 2 types of proteins?
Fibrous and globular
What is are some examples of fibrous proteins?
Keratin and collagen
Where is keratin found?
Hair and nails
Where is collagen found?
Skin
What are some examples of globular proteins?
Pepsin, insulin and haemoglobin
Where is pepsin found and its function?
- enzyme in stomach
- digests proteins
Where is insulin produced and its function?
- prancreas
- regulates glucose in blood
Where is haemoglobin found and its function?
- red protein pigment in red blood cell
- transports oxygen in blood
What is haemoglobin comprised of?
4 subunits each containing iron atom bound to haem group
What are the properties of fibrous proteins?
- no tertiary structure
- long fibres or sheets in shape
- insoluble in water
- length of polypeptide chain may vary
- structural functions
