Lipids Flashcards
What elements do lipids contain?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What are lipids soluble in?
Alcohol
Why are lipids insoluble in water?
Non polar molecules due to large number of carbon and hydrogen
What are the 3 groups of lipids?
- Triglycerides
- phospholipids
- steroids
What are triglycerides made up of?
- one molecule of glycerol
- 3 fatty acid tails
What are the properties of triglycerides?
- large, insoluble molecules so hydrophobic
- 3 ester bonds formed between glycerol and fatty acid
- 3 water molecules released through condensation reaction
What are fatty acids?
Long hydrocarbons chain with carboxylic acid group at one end
What are the 2 types of fatty acids?
- saturated
- unsaturated
What are the properties of saturated fatty acids?
- single C-C bond
- contain more hydrogen
- linear hydrocarbon chain
- solid at room temperature
- high melting point
- fatty acids can pack closely together
- strong intermolecular bonds between fatty acid chains
What are the properties of unsaturated fatty acids?
- one or more C=C double bonds
- causes a kink
- non-linear chains do not allow fatty acid molecules to pack closely together
- weaker intermolecular bonds between fatty acid chains
- lower melting point
- liquids at room temperature
What are phospholipids made up of?
- one glycerol molecule
- 2 fatty acid tails
- one phosphate group
Which end of the phospholipids is hydrophobic?
Fatty acid tail
Which end of the phospholipids is hydrophilic?
Phosphate
What does hydrophobic mean?
Repels water
What does hydrophilic mean?
Attracted to water
What is the phospholipids bilayer?
- hydrophilic phosphate head is facing cytoplasm and tissue fluid
- hydrophobic fatty acid tails facing away from water based substances
What is the structure of steroids?
4 ring
What are the 3 examples of steroids?
- cholesterol
- testosterone
- oestrogen
What are testosterone and oestrogen an example of?
Lipid based hormones
What does cholesterol do in cell membranes?
Makes more rigid
Describe the emulsion test
- Mix sample with alcohol in test tube
- Shake tube thoroughly
- Add cold water and shake gently
- If milky white emulsion occurs, lipid is present
What are the 6 roles of lipids?
- Source of energy
- Waterproofing
- Insulation
- Protection
- Buoyancy
- Electrical insulator
