Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the components of the cardiovascular system?
Heart, blood vessels, blood
Describe the features of arteries
- Transports blood at high pressure
- No valves
- Thick muscular elastic walls
- High velocity
Which way does the arteries carry blood?
Carries oxygenated blood away from the heart to the organs
What are the functions of arterioles?
Connectors between arteries and capillaries and are much smaller but similar to arteries
Describe the features of capillaries
- Site of gaseous and nutritional exchange
- Thin walls
- Very narrow lumen
- Low blood pressure
- No valves
Which way do the capillaries move blood?
Moves both oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from the arteries to the veins.
Describe the function and feature of venules
Thin wall, receives blood from capillaries
Describe the features of the veins
- Thin less muscular walls
- Larger lumen
- Low blood pressure
- Valves
Which way do the veins move blood?
Carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
What are red blood cells referred to as?
Erythrocyte
What is a pre capillary sphincter?
Ring of muscle that contracts and relaxes before the capillaries
Describe the tunica externa
1.The outer region of the artery
2. Tough collagen resists overstretching
Describe the tunica media
- Middle region of the artery
- Elastic smooth muscular layers
- Contraction of smooth muscle regulates blood flow and maintains pressure
Describe the tunica intima
- Innermost region of the artery
- Lined by a single layer of cells (endothelium) ; smooth to reduce friction normally on an internal elastic layer
