Properties of water Flashcards
What are some properties of water
Thermal stability
Forms a liquid
Low density of ice
Surface tension
Cohesion
Solvent
Metabolic
Transparency
How is water imporant for aquatic life
Water has thermal stability so it is a stable environment for aquatic animals
Its a liquid between 0-100 degrees so it can be used to transport medium for aquatic plants and animals
Ice has a lower density so it floats on top of water, insulating the water before
Water is transparent so light can be passed through for plants
Small animals are able to move across the surface of the water due to its surface tension
How do bonds form between water molecules
Water is a polar molecule. Hydrogen bonds form between the delta negative oxygen molecules and the delta positive hydrogen atoms
What is capillary action
It is when water molecules are attracted to molecules in the straw (Adhesion), then as those water molecules climb the straw they attract other water molecules (cohesion)
Why is the ability of water to act a solvent important for the survival of organisms?
Dilutes toxic substances
The bodies reactions take place within water
Medium for metabolic reactions
Transport molecules around an organism (Circulatory system)
allows ionic compounds to separate ;
Explain why water is a good solvent.
molecules are polar
which enables water molecules to bind to solute molecules
Explain how properties relating to the density of water contribute to the survival of organisms.
Ice, is less dense than water so it floats on surface
ice, provides habitat for
some species
floating ice insulates water
