Enzyme Inhibitors Flashcards
What is the role of an Inhibitor
It slows down the rate of enzyme activity
What is a competitive inhibitor
A competitive inhibitor competes with the substrate for the active site, when it enters the active site is physically blocks the substrate from entering,
They are similar shape to the substrate, normally reversible, and can be overcome by increasing substrate concentration
What is a Non-competitive inhibitor
This is a type of inhibitor that doesn’t bind to the enzyme’s active site, however it binds elsewhere and causes conformational changes to the enzyme, this means that the substrate is unable to fit.
Mostly Non-reversible
Advantages of using enzymes rather than inorganic catalysts
They are specific
Work at normal temperature and pressure (much less energy needed)
Efficent
What are some industrial uses for enzymes?
Baby food, Detergent, Dye, Apple juice, food processing (amylase for bread, protease for cheese), textiles (cellulase for treating demon to create stone wash), Grain processing (conversion of corn starch into high fructose syrup)
How are most Enzymes grown
From one micro-organism, in bulk (this is due to the high growth rates)
