What is the mechanism of action of the POP?
Thickens cervical mucus
What is the regime for the POP?
Must be taken every day without a break at the same time (+/- 3 hours).
What is the difference between starting the POP between day 1-5 of cycle and starting it after this?
- 1-5 days - cover is immediate
2. Later - use condom for 2 days
What is the advice given for a missed POP?
Take next one immediately and use condom for 2 days.
What is the difference between Cerazette and other POPs?
- Contains desogestrel
- More effective
- Can be taken within 12-hour period
What are the advantages of the POP?
- Suitable for older women
- Where COCP is contraindicated
- Good for lactating mothers
- No increased VTE risk
- Not affected by broad spectrum antibiotics
What are the disadvantages of POP?
- Higher failure rate than COCP
- Vaginal spotting (breakthrough bleeding)
- Breast tenderness
- Depression, acne
- Reduced libido, bloating
- Efficacy reduced with hepatic enzyme-inducing drugs
What are the contraindications to all progesterone contraception?
- Current breast cancer
- Liver disease
- Migraine and aura
- SLE and antiphospholipid antibodies
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
