Problems of the heart and blood Flashcards
Purpose of the vein
(Usually) transports deoxygenated blood to the heart
Function of the artery
(Usually) transports oxygenated blood under high pressure away from the heart
Function of capillary
Allow fast blood exchange/diffusion of substances out of blood into the body
Coronary arteries
Blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with oxygen and glucose for respiration
Pacemaker
The natural resting heart rate is controlled by a group of specialized cells in the right atrium
Artificial pacemaker
Electrical device used to correct irregularities in heart rate
Statins
Drugs used to reduce blood cholesterol levels which slows rate of fatty build up in blood vessels
Stents
Wire mesh (balloon) which is inserted into artery to wide it and allow more blood to flow
Valves
Prevent the back flow of blood . If valves fail leaks may develop and the deoxygenated will not be able to get oxygenated as it cannot travel to the lungs
STENT
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Advantages:
Minor safe operation
Disadvantages:
Risk of infection
Statins
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Advantages:
Does not require surgery as they are pills
Disadvantages:
Can increase risk of type 2 diabetes
Artificial valve
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Advantages:
High success rate
Disadvantages :
Blood thinners must be prescribed to prevent clots
Risk of infection
Transplant
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
advantages:
Can treat several heart conditions at once
Disadvantages
There is a risk of infection
The waiting list is incredibly long and can be to long for some patients to live
Pacemaker
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Advantages
Long lasting
Disadvantages
Patients must avoid magnetic/electromagnetic fields of energy
Does not treat heart disease
