Bioenergetics for plants Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
The process in the plant converting carbon dioxide and water via sunlight to glucose and oxygen
Word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide +water+energy= glucose and oxygen
What does the plant use glucose for
For respiration
Making cellulose which strengthens the plant
Stored as starch ready to use when photosynthesis cannot occur
Making amino acids . When glucose is combined with nitrate ions it makes proteins for the cell
Pondweed practical
Place a source of white light at a specific distance shining on the pond weed
Let the plant photosynthesis for a specific amount of time . Collect the oxygen produced via a capillary tube
Then use a gas syringe to remove the oxygen . Place a ruler next the syringe so that we can measure the volume of oxygen produced
Repeat the experiment changing the distance of the light source
Why is distance and light intensity proportional
As distance increases intensity will decrease
How do you calculate light intensity
1/ distance squared
How do greenhouses create the ideal environment for plants
They trap the suns heat and makes sure that the temperature does not become a limiting factor.
How can you increase the levels of carbon dioxide for a plant
Use a paraffin heater . As the paraffin is burnt one of the byproducts is carbon dioxide
Equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water + light = glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2
