Define Prophylaxis
Prior to contamination of previously sterile tissues
Define Presumptive
Looks like an infection but not 100%
Indication for prophylaxis
Foreign body implant
Infection with severe consequences
Surgeries with high infxn rate
Cardiac
Orthopedic
Vascular Prophylaxis
Cefazolin
Cefuroxime (cardiac only)
Appendectomy Prophylaxis
Cefoxitin
Cefotetan
Cefazolin + metro
Colorectal Surgery Prophylaxis
Ceftriaxone/Cefazolin + Metro
Administer 1 hr to incision
Abx
Administer 2 hrs to incision
Vanc or FQ
> 3 Hr Surgery Re-dose every
2 half lives
Stop prophylaxis when?
24 hrs
48 for cardiothoracic
Prophylaxis recommended when?
Dental with gingival
Invasive respiratory
Surgical with infected skin
