Bacteriology Flashcards
Mircoorganism
Organisms that is too small to be seen with the naked eye
Define Bacteria
Living, single-celled organisms
How to classify bacteria
According to… Cell shape
Cell grouping
Ability to retain specific stains
Growth conditions
Define Strains
Population of organisms that is distinguishable from others and descends from a single organisms
Define Serovars
Differ in antigenic properties
So whats on their surface
Define Type Strain
ATCC strain
First or most fully characterized
Cell shape
Cocci
Bacilli
Spirochetes
Pleomorphic (varied size and shape)
Lipopolysaccharide is…
Potent activator of the immune system
Gram stains
Crystal violet (primary)
Iodine
Alcohol
Safranin
After primary stain, what color are gram + and gram - bugs?
All are violet
What does the alcohol do?
Dissolves some of the peptidoglycan, so if it is gram negative it will stain the different color bc there is very little there
Mycobacteria are
weakly gram positive
Myoplasma
DO NOT stain
Acid Fast Stain
Carbolfuchsin stains (Ziehl-Neelson or Kinyoun) Fluorescent stain (Rhodamine-Auroamine or Auromine)
Bacterial Growth
Binary Fission
Rapidly
