Any infection or inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord

Colonize in the nasopharynx then invade through the cerebral vessels

Signs and symptoms
Lethargy, altered mental status, seizures, stiff neck/back
Rash
PE
Kernig’s sign (pain in neck when bending knee)
Brudzinski’s (Lift head and legs come up)
Meningitis
High neutrophils
Low glucose
High proteins
Steroids in meningitis infection dose
BEFORE antibiotics
Dexamethasone 10 mg IV Q6H x 4d
Good CSF penetration requires?
Lipophilic Smaller Non-ionized Low protein binding Less efflux pump activity
