Abuses of Power
psychological effects of holding power
- self-serving biases increase. ex: i got to the top on my own.
- more likely to hold stereotypes of those without power.
- more likely to believe systems are just and fair
disinhibition speaking behavior:
more likely to take up more time, interrupt, or express unsolicited opinions.
disinhibition social behavior:
more likely to take action without permission
disinhibition more optimistic assessments of risk:
- more likely to make bold strategic changes or pursue innovation
self focus
- power leads people to be less dependent on others. as a result, people become less concerned with how others see them.
self- focus instrumental
power leads people to view others through instrumental terms. viewing others as a means to an end: how would this person be useful to me?
power leads to
- reduced compassion or less emotional reactivity
- less likely to infer others’ thoughts or attitudes or take perspective of others
- less likely to remember individuating information
blind obedience
more likely to accept orders without questioning
disengagement and neglect
- more likely to believe success is improbable or impossible
increase in health problems
higher levels of stress and anxiety
