Movement away from the midline of the body

Deep
Away from surface

Far from the point of attachment to the trunk or far the beginning of structure.

Pertaining to back
Dorsiflexion
Decreasing the angle of the ankle joint so that the foot moves upward, toward the knee or ceiling.
Epigastric
Middle upper region above stomach
Extension
Increasing the angle between two bones; straightening out limb.
Flexion
Decreasing the angle between two bones; bending limb.
Frontal (coronal) plane
Vertical plane dividing the body or structure into anterior and posterior portions.
Hypochondriac region
Right and left upper regions beneath ribs.
Hypogastric region
Middle lower regions below the umbilical region
Inferior
Below structure
Inguinal region
Right and left lower regions near the groin. Also called iliac regions.
Lateral
Pertaining to side.
Lumbar
Right and left middle regions near the waist
Medial
Pertaining to the middle, or nearer the medial plane of the body.
Plantar flexion
Motion that moves the foot downward toward the ground as when pointing the toes or stepping on the gas pedal.
Posterior (dorsal)
Back side of the body.
Pronation
Act of turning the palm down.
Prone
Lying on belly.
Proximal
Near the point of attachment to the trunk or near beginning of a structure
Quadrants
RUQ right upper quadrant
LUQ left upper quadrant
RLQ right lower quadrant
LLQ left lower quadrant

Above structure; pertaining to the head.
Superficial
On the surface.

The act of turning palm up..

Laying on back

Space in chest containing the heart and other organs
Transverse (axial) plane
Horizontal plane dividing body into upper and lower portions.
Umbilical region
Region of the naval and umbilicus.
Bilateral
Pertaining to both sides.
Contralateral
Pertaining to opposite side.
Unilateral
Pertaining to one side.
