Q

Explain how SA:V ratio affects cell size and cellular health and processes

A

Point 1: Surface Area is directly proportional to the rate of movements in and out of the cell.

Point 2: Volume is directly proportional to the rate of reaction

Point 3: Bigger SA:V means that the SA > volume

Point 4: Smaller SA:V means SA < V

If SA:V is too small, this means SA is small and V is big. This means the rate of metabolism is high and the rate of movement is very low.**
- Implication: A lot of metabolic processes are* happening, but the intake and excretion of the reactants and products are slow
- implication: death, as
Toxins will accumulate and negatively impact the cell because faster production than excretion

The cell cannot take in as much as it needs because substances will not enter (or exit) as quickly

The cell May overheat because metabolism produces heat faster than it is lost at cell surface

Implication: ideal is that SA to Volume ratio is BIG
