Compare the three types of consultation styles?
Directing- Delivery of expert advice
Following- Listening to the patient to get the full picture & providing support and encouragement
Guiding-Helping the patient decide what they want/ identifying patient goals and how they could be achieved.

- Affirmation (Demonstrate an appreciaton of the patient’s efforts)
- Reflective listening (listen to what has been said and repeat it back)

List the important factors in a consultation?
- Inviting the patient to talk about the behaviour change.
- Gather information about what is affecting the change.
- Provide support
- Convey your understanding
- Get information across.
What are the 3 types of patient’s you will come across?
Those that want to quit now.
Those that want to quit in the future
Those who never want to quit.
Explain the steps of behaviour change counselling
1-establish rapport (by asking questions to understand the patient better)
2-Set an agenda (decide what you are aiming to change)
3-work out their readiness to change.
4-Exchange information.
5-Reduce resistance.
How do you work out the patient’s readiness to change?
It needs to be Important to the patient to want to change.
The patient needs to be confident in their abilities to change.
How do we reduce resistance?
Emphasise the personal choice and control of the patient & back off if neccesary for the patient.
