Q

What are the 6 principles of crown preparation?

  1. preservation of tooth structure
  2. Retention and Resistance

Q

Discuss the impact of over and underpreparing the tooth prior to a crown.

A

Overpreparing a tooth- will cause weakening of the tooth and damage of the pulp.

Underpreparing the tooth- poor aesthetics and it will be overbuilt (this can encroach on the supracrestal attachment causing gingivitis and periodonitis)

Q

Compare the retention and resistance of a crown.

A

Retention prevents the removal along the path of insertion.

This is done by tapering the tooth at a 6* angle to limit the paths of insertion.

Resistance prevents dislodgement

This is achieved by creating longer walls, so the crown will have to move further before it dislodges.

Q

How do we ensure structural durability of the restoration.

A

We ensure that the material is thick by:

  • Occlusal reduction
  • Bevelling the functional cusp (you round off the cusp subjected to the occlusal load- we don’t want to have any sharp edges that could cause a fracture)
  • Axial reduction- we want to reduce the tooth in at least 2 planes.

Q

How do we preserve the periodontium?

A

Margins should be:

  • Smooth and fully exposed to a cleansing action
  • Placed so that the dentist can finish them and the patient can clean them.
  • Placed at the gingival margin (if possible )
