H&N week 5- CN & floor & base of cranial cavity Flashcards
Label this diagram of the cranial nerves at the floor of the cranial cavity.

What is an anaeursym?
Pathological swelling of the artery.
What is the olfactory bulb?
Where a lot of little olfactory nerves pass into & follow the olfactory tract to the forebrain.
What is the anterior clinoid process?
A bony projection where the optic nerve disappears anterior to

What are the boundaries of the middle cranial fossa?
From the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone to the superior border of the petrous temporal bone.
Name this foramen and what passes through it.

Internal acoustic meatus.
The facial and vestibucochlear nerve passes through here.
What arteries join together to form the Basilar artery?
The R and L vertebral arteries.
Compare the two roots of the spinal accessory nerve
Cranial root - helps supply the muscles of pharynx and larynx (along with vagus)
Spinal root- comes from C1-C5 of the spinal chord and supplies the sternocleiodmastoid and trapezius.
Where does the abducens nerve exit the skull?
At the superior orbital fissure.
What is the pituitary stalk?
A part of the pituitary gland that is covered by diahragmus cells (a thin part of the dura mater)
What is the Diploe?
Bone marrow that seperates the inner and outer tables of the skull.
What is the dental relevance of trigeminal neuralgia?
Dental treatments can trigger it.
It presents as a sharp pain in one of the trigeminal regions.
Label this diagram of the cross section of the cranial cavity .

What is A in the diagram

Falx cerebri.
This is a large fold of dura mater.

What is B in the diagram?

Tentorium cerebelli- an almost horizontal fold of dura mater at the back of the skull.

What is the function of the inferior sagittal sinus?
This joins with the great cerebral vein to form the straight sinus.
What is the great cerebral vein?
A large vein that drains the midline parts of the forebrain.
Sometimes known as the Vein of Galen.
Where does the blood of the vein of galen flow back to?
The straight sinus.
What is the crista gali?
A bony projection that the falx cerebri attaches to.
What are the superior cerebral veins?
What is characteristic of them>
Thin walled veins that drain the upper parts of the cerebral hemisphere.
There are no valves in these veins.
Label this image of the floor of the cranial fossa.

What is the red arrow pointing to?

Foramen lacerum-
This is a lacey projection and a plug of cartilage sits in it.
What is the green on this skull?

Sella Turcica (the turkish saddle)
What is this foramen and what passes through?

Superior orbital fissure

The internal carotid artery passes through .
Name this hole and what passes through it ?

Optic canal-
Optic nerve.
Name this hole and what passes through it ?

Cribiform plate- the olfactory nerves pass through here.
Label this Norma basalis view of the skull

What is this hole and what does it transmit

Stylomastoid foramen
This transmits the facial nerve.
