H&N week 3- The face Flashcards
Label this diagram of the muscles of facial expression

Label this diagram of the deep disection of the face.

What is the medial palpebral ligament?
A node of connective tissue at the medial end of the eyelid.
This is the attachment for the eye muscles.

What is this muscle and what is it’s function?

Levator labii Superiorus
Elevation of the upper lip and nose.
Compare the two zygomaticus muscles
Minor Zygomaticus muscle is smaller and found medially.
Major Zygomaticus muscle is larger and found on its lateral side.
Name and give the function of this muscle.

The Risourius muscle pulls the corner of the mouth out to the side.

What is this muscle and what is its’ function

Depressor anguli Oris-
This pulls the corner of the mouth down
What is this muscle and what is it’s function?

Platysma muscle which wrinkles the skin of the neck.
What muscle is this and what is it’s function?

Depressor labi inferiorus-
This pulls the lower lip down.
What is this muscle and what is it’s function?

Orbicularis oris
This provides a seal for your mouth.
Name and function of this muscle:

Buccinator
Gives tone to the cheek and pushes food in between teeth when eating.
compare the two parts of the orbicularis oculi?
The Orbital part (outer) contains courser fibres for closing the eyes.
The Palpebral part contains finer fibres for blinking.

Name and function of this muscle.

Procerus muscle-
Contracts to wrinkle nose (look of concentration)
Name and function of this muscle?

Frontalis muscle
Wrinkles the skin of the forehead and raises the eyebrows.
Name and function

Epicranial Aponeurosis-
A flattened tendon that joins the two frontalis muscles together.
Name the 5 branches of the facial nerve & what they supply
Temporal- supplies eye and forehead
Zygomatic -Supplies the lower part of the eye
Buccal- supplies upper lip
Marginal mandibular- lower lip and chin.
Cervical- supplies platsyma
Discuss the two branches of the facial artery supplying the lip?
Superior labial branch- which supplies the upper lip.
Inferior labial branch- supplies the lower lip.
What do we mean by the anastamosis of the facial artery?
The left and right superior labial branch.
AND
The left and right inferior labial branch
Meet end to end.
This is known as an anastomosis.

What is the angular artery?
This is what we call the facial artery once it reaches the lateral side of the nose.
What is the superficial temporal artery?
This supplies blood to the side of the head and is the final branch of the external carotid artery.
What is the accessory parotid?
Lobules of the parotid gland found at the upper edge of the parotid duct.
Where does the parotid duct open?
In the mouth opposite the upper 2nd molar.
Where do you find the parotid lymph nodes?
Embedded on the surface of the parotid gland.
Discuss the two coverings of the parotid salivary gland
We have the true and the false capsules:
(Inner) True capsule-This is fibrous
(Outer) False capsule- A deep layer of fascia- which does not expand meaning swelling of the parotid gland is sore.
What 2 branches does the external carotid artery divide into at the angle of the mandible?
- Maxillary artery
- superficial temporal artery.
What structures are found in the parotid gland?
Deepest:
External carotid artery
External jugular vein
Facial nerve
Most superficial.
