7
Q

explain root pressure in relation to water’s upwards movement

A

water moving into the roots through osmosis builds up pressure in the root, pushing water into the stems

8
Q

explain transpiration in relation to water’s upwards movement

A

is the loss of water vapour by evaporation through stomata of a leaf. when water evaporates from the leaves, it pulls the water molecules up the plant. can be explained using cohesion-tension model

10
Q

explain cohesion in the cohesion tension model

A

means that similar molecules are attracted to each other- this means that there is constantly a column of water in the xylem

12
Q

explain three different ways in which water loss is controlled in a plant

A

waxy cuticle- covers some leaves, doesnt allow water to pass. leaves have adaptions- e.g cacti have thin spiny needles. stomata- undersurface of a leaf, close at night and open at day

Q

how might a root be modified for food storage?

A

tap roots in dicot plants often become swollen and fleshy with starch. e.g carrot

how might a stem be modified for food storage

A

i.e potatoes- underground stem system. tips of roots called tubers become swollen with starch

16
Q

how might a leaf be modified for food storage

A

bulbs,,, leaves become fleshy and swollen with starch and surround an apical bud e.g onion

17
Q

where does exchange of gases occur in plants

A

stomata and lenticles

18
Q

what time of day does photosynthesis begin

A

when the sun rises in the morning

19
Q

explain how stomata open and close

A

water enters the the guard cells they expand into curved shape and a gap opens between them. co2 levels determine whether a stoma opens/closes. when co2 gets used up in photosynthesis there’s a drop in co2 levels… causes potassium ions to enter. osmosis from neighbouring cells causes the stoma to open.
