cell structure Flashcards
name one type of animal cell that does not have mitochondria
red blood cell
t or f, an animal cell will burst if placed in a concentrated sugar solution
false (will shrink)
define eukaryotic + prokaryotic
eukaryotic: has nucleus + membrane bound organelles
prokaryotic: has no nucleus/ or membrane bound organelles
what stain did you use to look at cells under the microscope?
iodine (plants) or methylane blue (animal)
what is the benefit of using a stain?
makes the cell easier to see
name 5 organelles/features of a plant cell
chloroplast, vacuole, cytoplasm, cell wall, cell membrane, mitochondria
name 5 organelles/features of an animal cell
cell membrane, nucleus, ribosome, mitochondria, cytoplasm
what is the cell membrane composed of?
phospholipids + proteins
what are phospholipids made of?
water loving phosphate group, water hating lipid.
how is the cell membrane arranged?
bi-layer, phosphates exposed on the outside, lipids in the middle
name 3 functions of the cell membrane
retains cell contents, controls what enters/leaves the cell (selectively-permeable), gives slight support
t or f, mitochondria have a double membrane
true
name 3 features of a cholorplast
sometimes have dna, granum, thylakoid discs, starch grain
function of ribosomes?
to produce proteins
function of mitochondria
site of respiration, supplies energy to the cell.
3 differences between plant + animal cells
plant cells have cell walls, chloroplasts, chlorophyll
animal cells do not have these
how did you examine plant cells under the microscope?
- forceps to peel a thin layer of onion
- place small piece of onion on a slide
- add a few drops of iodine
- add coverslip at 45 degree angle to eliminate bubbles
-use coarse/fine adjustment wheel to focus the image
how did you examine animal cells under the microscope
- scrape inside of your mouth with cotton swab to collect cheek cells
- spread the cells onto a glass slide
- add few drops of methylane blue
- add coverslip at a 45 degree angle to eliminate bubbles
- use coarse/fine adjustment wheel to focus the image
explain the structure of a mitochondria
has a double membrane. has infoldings called cristae. the gaps between these infoldings is called the matrix. the more infoldings the mitochondira has, the more energy that can be produced
what are ribosomes made of
they are made of RNA and protein
