Plant Nutrition (not finished) Flashcards
Define photosynthesis
The process of plants making carbohydrates from raw materials using energy from sunlight
What is the equation of photosynthesis (higher level)
carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
Write a balanced symbol equation for this reaction (higher level)
6(CO2) + 6(H2O) -> C6H12O6 + 6(O2)
What is the immediate energy made by photosynthesis made of
Glucose
What is the stored energy made by photosynthesis made of
Starch
How do plants transport glucose (instant energy) to parts that do not photosynthesise
By making sucrose
Why do plants make cellulose?
To make cell walls
What are two external factors required for photosynthesis
sunlight and chlorophyll
What are the parallel tubes in leaves?
Vascular Bundles
Where is the epidermis and what is its function?
The epidermis is all the way at the top of the leaf and reduces quantity of water vapour escaping by being packed tightly.
What substance does the epidermis secrete?
The sticky cuticle
What is the layer below the epidermis and its function?
Palisade Mesophyll is a layer of tall narrow cells with lots of chloroplasts to photosynthesise
What is the next layer below the palisade mesophyll?
The spongy mespohyll, which does some photsoynthesis, and contains air gaps, allowing O2 and CO2 to diffuse within the leaf.
What are the stomata?
Openings in the bottom of the leaf, allowing diffusion of CO2 and oxygen into the plant, and diffusion of water vapour out of the plant.
What are guard cells?
Cells surrounding the stomata that regulate whether it opens or closes
