Excretion and Homeostasis Flashcards
What are the parts of the CNS
Brain and spinal Cord
What are the parts of PNS
Every neurone except those in the brain and spinal cord
What are receptors?
Cells or groups of cells that detect stimuli
What are effectors?
Parts of the body that respond to a stimulus. (Muscles and glands)
What is a nerve?
A group of neurone axons lying together
What does a motor neurone cell body contain?
dendrite (little sticks)
cell membrane
cytoplasm
nucleus
ribosome
mitochondria
What are the other parts of a motor neurone?
axon (the tube)
myelin sheath (coating)
nucleus of myelin sheath (myelin sheath is a cell too)
nerve ending (axon splits into several endings)
What is a nerve impulse?
An electrical signal that passes rapidly along an axon.
What is a sensory neurone?
A neurone that transmits impulses from a receptor to the CNS
What is a motor neurone?
A neurone that transmits impulses from the CNS to effector cells.
What is a relay neurone?
A neurone that transmits impulses within the CNS
What is a reflex?
An automatic and rapid response by the body to a stimulus.
What is a synaptic gap?
A tiny gap between two neurones at the synapse (junction between 2 neurones)
What happens when an electrical impulse travels from one neurone to another?
- Vesicle containing neurotransmitter molecules reaches end of neurone
- Neurotransmitter molecules diffuse across narrow gap
- Receptor proteins of other neurone receive the neurotransmitters.
What is the relationship between the shapes of a neurotransmitter and a receptor protein?
