Asymptomatic hair-containing cysts and sinuses to large symptomatic abscesses of the sacrococcygeal region
Where do pilonidal sinuses or cysts occur?
Midline in the upper part of the natal cleft
Which decade of life does pilonidal disease occur?
Before the 4th decade of life
Where is an abscessed pilonidal cyst located?
Midline and does not communicate with the anorectum
What lab should you consider for pilonidal disease?
CBC if pt has systemic sx
Initial treatment for pilonidal disease?
I&D however recurrences is common
Definitive treatment for pilonidal disease?
Surgical excision performed in the operating room
What kind of dressing should be packed into a drained pilonidal abscess?
Wet to dry dressing
What antibiotics should be given for pilonidal disease as temporizing and palliative care?
Cephalexin
Doxycycline
Disposition of patients with pilonidal disease?
MEDADVICE pending physician supervisor preference
MEDEVAC for complicated cases
