Thrush in immunocompromised patients

Retrosternal pain or heartburn (60%)
Odynophagia (50%)
Dysphagia (40%)
Patients with pill induced esophagitis present with what sx?
Hematemesis, abdominal pain and weight loss
How do patients with pill induced esophagitis typically take their pills?
Without water at bedtime
Patients with candida esophagitis present with what sx?
Odynophagia, retrosternal pain
White mucosal plaque-like lesions
What labs should be considered for esophagitis?
If infection is concern
CBC, specimen culture, swab for candida
What imaging should be considered for esophagitis?
Endoscopy
Treatment of pill induced esophagitis?
Stop taking offensive med
Take med with water
Treatment of candida esophagitis
Evaluate from immunocompromised conditions: HIV, Cancer, DM
When should broad spectrum antibiotics be considered in patients with esophagitis?
Elevated WBC and fever
