Inferior epigastric vessels (superior border)
Lateral Aspect of rectus abdominis (medial border)
Inguinal ligament (inferior border)
What is a hernia?
Any protrusion of any body part through a cavity
What are common locations of hernias?
Inguinal, femoral, hiatal, umbilical
What are less common types of hernias?
Obturator, lumbar
What is the most common type of hernia?
Inguinal hernia accounts for 75-80% of hernias
Do males or females more commonly get hernias?
M>F
What are the 2 main inguinal hernias?
Direct and indirect
Whats the difference between direct and indirect hernias?
Direct= through haselbach’s triangle
Indirect= through inguinal canal
How do you palpate inguinal hernias in males?
Bear down, turn head and cough
Incarcerated hernias that cannot be manually reduced must be what?
Surgically fixed
How should you passively reduce a hernia?
Place patient in Trendelenburg
