Physiology of Muscle Contraction Flashcards
1
Q
myofibril
A
- make up the muscle fibers (1000s of myofibrils per muscle fiber)
- cylindrical sections that run the length of muscle fibers
- contain sarcomeres
2
Q
sarcomere
A
- contractile unit of myofibrils
- contains 2 types of protein myofilaments
- measured from one z-line to the next
3
Q
myosin
A
thick protein myofilaments of sarcomere
held together by m-line
4
Q
actin
A
- thin protein myofilaments of sarcomere
- parallel bands connected by z-lines
5
Q
z- line
A
- vertical lines that divide one sarcomere from the next
- during muscle contraction, move closer to the center M line
6
Q
A band
A
- dark band (dark when stained)
- contains thick + think filaments
7
Q
steps of muscle contraction
A
- nerve impulse sent to neuromuscular junction of muscle fiber
- acetylcholine released from motor nerve ending
- acetylcholine binds to receptors on muscle cell and opens sodium channels
- sodium flows inside the sarcoplasm, causing action potential in sarcolemma
- action potential causes calcium ions to be released from sarcoplasmic reticulum
- calcium ions cause cross-bridges of myosin filaments to bend backward and attach to actin filaments
- cross-bridges bend forward (50-100x) and pull actin filaments to center of sarcomere
- movement of actin filaments –> muscle contraction
8
Q
sarcoplasmic reticulum
A
smoother ER in striated muscle
9
Q
acetylcholine
A
- neurotransmitter, released from motor nerve ending
- binds to receptors on muscle cell
- opens sodium channels
10
Q
sodium channel
A
when open, allow sodium ions to flow into sarcoplasm
11
Q
sarcolemma
A
cell membrane of the muscle fiber
