Organ Systems Flashcards
integumentary system
skin system - functions:
- protects deep tissues from injury, internal organs from temp changes
- produces vitamin d
- contains pain & pressure receptors
- contains sweat & oil glands
layers of skin
- epidermic (outer - mostly adipocyte fat cells)
- dermis (middle)
- hypodermis (inner)
skeletal system
functions:
- framework for muscular system/where muscles attach
- protects & supports bodily organs
- houses red blood cells, stores minerals
muscular system
functions:
- allows for body mvmt
- allows us to perform all daily activities
types of muscular tissue
cardiac
skeletal
smooth
nervous system
brain, spinal cord, nerves
functions:
- internal communication btwn body’s cells (via electrical impulses)
- allows body to respond to internal & external environment
digestive system
functions:
- breaks food down into small molecules
- absorbs those molecules into blood stream as nutrients
endocrine system
glands (mainly thyroid, adrenal glands in brain)
functions:
-make hormones that regulate reproduction and metabolism
-ATP production from glucose molecules
metabolism
chemical reactions that enable bodily function
- catabolism (breakdown of complex structures into simple ones)
- anabolism (synthesis of complex structures from simple ones)
- cellular respiration (ATP production)
cardiovascular system
heart, blood vessels, blood
functions:
- moves oxygen & nutrients throughout body
- arteries = delivery, veins = removal
lymphatic system
network of vessels and nodes throughout the body
functions:
- immunity, fighting off disease
- drains excess fluid back to the heart
respiratory system
functions:
- keeps blood supplied w/oxygen
- removes waste CO2 (byproduct of metabolism)
urinary system
functions:
- excretion of waste from body
- regulates bloods water & electrolyte balance
- helps move nutrients & waste thru body
reproductive systems (male & female)
controlled by hormones from endocrine system
functions:
- creates new life via cellular reproduction
- male sperm cell + oocyte (egg) –> baby
types of tissue (4)
- epithelium (body surface, lines body cavities)
- muscle (enables mvmt)
- connective (supports/protects organs, example = bone)
- nervous (responsible for communication via electrical impulse)
