Physiology and Anatomy vocabulary 7 Flashcards
The action or faculty of tasting.
Gustation
The action or capacity of smelling; the sense of smell.
Olfaction
Enclosed by a ridge of tissue.
Circumvallate
Shaped like a leaf.
Foliate
Thread-like shape.
Filiform
Mushroom-shaped structures located on the tongue.
Fungiform
Process of converting sound waves into a neural signal.
Audition
Sensory receptor translates a stimulus into an action potential.
Transduction
The visible part of the hearing apparatus.
External ear
Tube that runs from the outer ear to the eardrum.
Auditory Canal
Thick, hard, flat bone that forms part of the skull’s base and side.
Temporal Bone
Air-filled cavity in the ear that’s located between the eardrum and the inner ear that transfers sound vibrations from your eardrum to your inner ear.
Middle Ear
Small bones or bony structures in the ear.
Ossicles
Eardrum; separates the outer ear from the middle ear. When sound waves reach this, they cause it to vibrate.
Tympanic Membrane
State of balance and stability.
Equilibrium
Sense of body position that is perceived both at the conscious and unconscious levels.
Proprioception
Process by which the nervous system senses, interprets, and integrates signals from within the body.
Interoception
Physiological process by which neural substrates are activated by physical stimuli resulting in the perception of what we describe as touch, pressure, pain, etc.
Somatosensation
