Art Definitions Flashcards
The element of art that is produced by light reflecting off of objects.
Color
Colors that are straight across from each other on the color wheel.
Complementary colors
A pure, unmixed color.
Hue
The lightness or darkness of a color.
Value
Colors that create a feeling of warmth and energy. (red, orange, yellow)
Warm Colors
Colors the create a calm and peaceful mood. (green, blue, purple)
Cool Colors
One color. (can be different shades or ranges of that one color)
Monochromatic
Color scheme of colors that are right next to each other on the color wheel.
Analogous Colors
Basic colors that make all the other colors. (red, yellow, blue)
Primary Colors
The outcome you get when you mix the primary colors together. (green, orange, purple)
Secondary Colors
The lighter value of a color that is created by mixing white with color.
Tint
Color that is created by mixing black with color.
Shade
Describes the way something could or would feel.
Texture
Path created by a point moving through space.
Line
An outline
Contour line
A regular shape. (triangle, circle, square)
Geometric Shape
irregular shape. (Splat, wonky circle)
Organic Shape
3 dimensional object that has height, width, and depth.
Form
Area around, inside, or between shapes/forms.
Space
Space occupied by an object.
Positive Space
Empty space around an object.
Negative Space
A drawing technique used to make depth in 2 dimensional artwork.
Linear Perspective
Vision distortion of objects from a particular perspective as they recede in space.
Foreshortening
The area where the land(or sea) and sky meet.
Horizon Line
Equal distance of weight in a design.
Balance
Your focal point. (the thing that catches people’s attention)
Emphasis
Same on both sides
Symmetrical Balance
Balance that is created when elements of each side are different but still balanced in a way.
Asymmetrical Balance
Repeating in a recurring and regular arrangement.
Pattern
Relative sizes of parts in a whole.
Proportion
Path the viewers eye takes through out a work of art because of the arrangement of elements.
Movement
The sense of harmony between all the elements in an artwork that creates a sense of completeness.
