physical fieldwork Flashcards
where is the location of your physical fieldwork
Thorpe bay is located in the est of London and it is south east from harpenden. Its is on the east coast and on the Thames estuary in Essex
why was thorpe bay a suitable place for collection of data
it was suitable to collect the data as it was close to harpenden where my school is and had our preferred coatstall management strategies
Explain why Thorpe bay was a suitable topic for your inquiry
my topic is suitable because the risks which were present when collecting our data were low so and were able to collect all of the data in one day
what were the risks while doing your fieldwork in Thorpe bay
injury such as rolled ankles
weather such as heavy rain
tide
getting lost
sinking sand
uneven ground
drowning
identify one potential risk in your physical geography field work
drowning
this can be prevented by the group leader not letting people go in the sea or to close to it so they dont get dragged out by the tides
how did you do the long-shore drift measurements
DESCRIPTION
measure a 5 meter gap between posts and then we measured the time it took for the orange to move from one post to the other
JUSTIFICATION OF METHOD
long shore drift shows weather coastal management is needed
STRENGTHS
quick and easy to do shows long drift well
WEAKNESSES
only did it between one groyne
How could it be improved
collect more at more locations along the beach
how did you do the groyne profile measurements
DESCRIPTION
we had a meter stick and measured each side of the groyne to see the build up of sediment
JUSTIFICATION
it explains how long shore drift displaces the sediment and in which direction it does so
STRENGTHS
proves our reason for testing due to the movement of sediment
WEAKNESSES
very time consuming
IMPROVEMENTS
you should do more groynes to gain a better average
how did i do the fieldwork sketches
DESCRIPTIONS
we sat at the back of the Beach and drew what we could see
wecdid this so we can think about different coastal management strategies
it made you think and look in a greater depth at things
often innaccurate drawings
we could have just taken a photo
justify one primary data collection method used i your physical geography inquiry
we did a groyne profile measurement to measure the amount long shore drift moved sediment on the beach and weather the groynes were effective at preventing it
justify the use of maps or photographs or field sketches in your physical geography inquiry
we did a field sketch so that we could look for nay type of coastline management strategies around us this was useful as we can see what was successful
what was your exam question for Thorpe bay geography fieldwork
To what extent do you agree groynes an effective coastal management stratgeys at Thorpe bay south end on sea
access the effectiveness of your data collection methods
At southend we measured the height of sand on each this was/ was not reliable
the method was effective/reliable
however an issue is
an alternative could be
which direction was the wind moving on the day
north east but the prevailing wind is south west
which direction was long shore drift occurring
from east to west due to the wind direction
what was the range of the long shore drift
58-88
explain your findingson your physical fieldwork
long shore drift is moving to the west this is due to the wind from the north east this was unexpected due to difference in the prevailing wind
What was my secondary datafor my physical fieldwork
a picture of the long shore drift and wind direction
what was our primary datafor phsical fieldwork
it was a bar graph which explained the depth of sediment along the groynes
what were the advantages of our primary data
easy to read and easy to construct
what werethe disadvantages of our primary data
can be interrupted incorrectly as depth of sediment
what is your sub questionfor physical fieldwork
is the process of long shore drift is taking place at Thorpe bay
to what extent are groynes an effective coast management strategy at Thorpe bay south end on sea
how long did it take for long shore drift to move the orange
68.3s
in the conclusion of your south end on sea question what should you talk
i should talk about the advantages and disadvantages the reasons behind my data and reason why the data could be invalid
why might my data be in valid
as we did in a particular time in the day and it could be different at different times o the day
