Phase III - Block I - Airframe Flashcards

1
Q

What are some important things to remember about Safety for airframes?

A
  1. When repiratory protection is required activities shall establish and maintain a respiratory protection system. 2. All noise areas must be labeled. A hearing monitoring program shall be implemented and a roster of all personnel kept on file. 3. Temporary protective eyewear must be made available for use with any HAZMAT. Emergency eye wash facilitiesmust also be available and tested per regulations. When hot brakes are suspected, never face the side of the wheel as an explosion of the wheel will follow the line of the axle, which may be outboard depending on the landing gear configuration. Always approach the wheel from fore to aft, never from the side.

Q

What is contained in the laminated plastic radome protruding beyond the normal contour of the fuselage nose?

A

This area is the aircraft radar compartment. The radome is hinged at the top, allowing it to be swung upward to gain access to the area inside.

Q

Explain what the aircraft flaps do?

A

Flaps increase lift at slower speeds for take-off and landing. When fully extended they also create drag for landing.

16
Q

Where is the vertical stabilizer located?

A

It rises above the horizontal stabilizer and provides directional stability.

17
Q

Where is the rudder located?

A

It is attached to the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer and provides yaw.

18
Q

What do the TRIM TABS do?

A

They provide minor corrections to maintain flight stability; they are attached to the trailing edge of the primary flight controls.

19
Q

Describe the main landing gear (MLG) assembly?

A
  1. It is installed in each main gear wheel well.
  2. Each assembly consists of two wheel assemblies mounted in tandem.
  3. Two shock struts (including the wheel axle for each wheel).
  4. The retraction mechanisms , a torque strut for maintaining wheel alignment.
  5. The wheel brake assemblies.
  6. The left and right MLG installations are mirror opposites.
20
Q

Describe the nose landing gear (NLG) assembly?

A

It consists of two wheels mounted on a single strut that retracts forward into the nose section by actuation of a hydraulic cylinder.

21
Q

Describe the paratroop doors??

A
  1. They are located aft of the MLG wheel wells.
  2. These doors are heavy and work on a counterbalance system.
  3. ALWAYS use caution when opening and closing the doors. Never slam the paratroop doors shut as serious damage may occur.
  4. When these doors are open (UP) they must be pinned
22
Q

Describe the Cargo door and ramp system?

A

It is located in the empennage and allows for the quick loading and off-loading of cargo, equipment, and personnel. The cargo door should never be lowered without first checking the area around it for clearance.

23
Q

What are the two modes of operation for the cargo door and ramp?

A

Manual and electric hydraulic pump.

24
Q

Describe the crew entrance door?

A
  1. It has 3 steps and serves as en entrance ladder.
  2. It is installed just forward of fuselage station 245 on the left side of the fuselage.
  3. The door is curved to conform to the fuselage when closed and may be released by either an inside release handle or an outside release handle.
  4. The door may be jettisoned in flight to fall free of the aircraft.
25
Q

Describe the emergency exits on the C-130T aircraft?

A
  1. They allow for emergency egress from the aircraft, 10 total.
  2. There are three overhead hatches, two pilot swing windows, the crew entrance door, two side emergency exits forward of the inboard engines, & two paratroop jump doors.
