Firefighting Fundamentals Flashcards
What are the responsibilities of a firefighter?
Primary: Saving Lives
Secondary: Extinguish fires and limit the damage to aircraft, shipboard, airfield installed equipment, and/or airfield structures.
What has the fire triangle been replaced with?
The fire tetrahedron
What is the fire tetrahedron?
- heat
- fuel
- oxygen
- chain reaction
How many classes of fires are there?
Four
What are the four classes of fire?
Class Alpha
Class Bravo
Class Charlie
Class Delta
Describe a class alpha fire?
Occurs in combustible materials that produce an ash such as burning wood and wood products, cloth, textiles, and fibrous materials, and paper products.
What is used to extinguish class alpha fires?
Water (H20) or Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF)
Describe a class bravo fire?
Occurs with flammable liquid substances such as gasoline, jet fuels, oil, and other petroleum based products.
What is used to extinguish class bravo fires?
Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), Halon 1211, Purple K Powder (PKP), and Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Describe a class Charlie fire?
Occurs in electrically energized items.
How do you extinguish a class charlie fire?
Energized: CO2, Halon, PKP and H2O in fog patterns with a minimum distance or 4 feet
De-energized: Treat as a Class Alpha, Bravo or Delta fire
Describe a class Delta fire?
Occurs in combustible metals such as magnesium and titanium.
How do you extinguish a class charlie fire?
Effective extinguishing agents are H2O in large quantities in high velocity fog, apply water from a safe distance or from behind shelter as small explosions can occur.
What is (AFFF)?
Aqueous Film Forming Foam
Describe (AFFF)?
Consists primarily of synthetic flourocarbon sufactant materials that are noncorrosive and have an unlimited shelf life when stored in a protected area.
