Pharynx -additional to slide 9 and 10- gag reflex Flashcards
What is the pharynx?
Space that connects the nose and mouth above to the larynx and oesophagus below involved in breaching, speech, coughing etc
What does it protect against?
Inhalation of solids / liquids into lungs
Fragments of teeth, amalgam material, dental tools, orthodontic appliances
what 3 areas of the pharynx are there?
- nasopharynx
- oropharynx
- larngopharynx
what makes up the respiratory tract?
nasal cavity
oral cavity
larynx
trachea
what makes up the alimentary tract?
oral cavity
oesophagus
what are the layers from left to right from the pharynx to the vertebrae?
- pharynx
- pharyngeal muscle
- buccopharnygeal fascia
- retropharyngeal space
- alar fascia
- retropharyngeal space
- prevertebral fascia
- prevertebral muscle
- longitudinal ligament
what 2 types of muscles are found in the pharynx?
circular
longitudinal
what areas of the circular muscles are there?
- superior
- middle
- inferior
how do the 3 areas of the circular muscles move food down?
-contract sequentially
what nerve innervates the circular muscles?
Innervated by CN X - pharyngeal plexus
where do the circular muscles insert?
midline raphe
where does the superior circular muscles attach from the midline raphe to?
- pterygoid hamulus
- pterygomandibular raphe
- mylohyoid line
where does the middle circular muscles attach from the midline raphe to?
greater horn of hyoid
where does the inferior circular muscles attach from the midline raphe to?
- thyroid cartilage (oblique line)
- cricoid cartilage
what is the space between superior and middle circular muscles?
gateway to the mouth
what is found in the gateway to the mouth?
- CN IX
- Lingual artery
- Stylopharyngeus muscle
what are the 3 longitudinal muscles?
- stylopharyngues
- palatopharyngeus
- saplingopharyngeus
what route does the stylopharyngess take?
from the styloid process and passes through ‘gateway to the mouth’ with the glossopharyngeal nerve
what is the only muscle supplied by the CN IX?
stylopharyngeus
where do all 3 longitudinal muscles insert?
posterior border of thyroid cartilage
what action does the longitudinal muscles do?
elevate pharynx and larynx
what muscles does the CN X supply?
- palatopharyngeus
- salpingopharyngeus
what muscles does the CN IX supply?
stylopharyngeus
What makes up the pharyngeal plexus?
nerve fibres derived from CN IX and CN X, sympathetic axons (from sympathetic trunk) and parasympathetic axons
