Parotid glands and TMJ Flashcards
what are parotid glands?
Major salivary gland and produces mainly serous fluid
where does the parotid duct drain into?
Into the mouth at the 2nd maxillary molar via parotid papilla
What are salvia calculi and what does it cause?
Calcified masses that obstruct ducts causing swelling and pain
What is the stimulus of saliva production?
thought, smell or taste of food
what is the nervous system response?
AUTONOMIC RESPONSE
- sympathetics- product sticky salvia (FIGHT OR FLIGHT)
- parasympathetics produce runny salvia (REST AND DIGEST)
What nerve supplies the parotid Gand with its parasympathetic secretomotor nerves?
Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)
Where does the middle ear lie?
tympanic cavity
how does parasympathetic supply go from the jugular foramen to the parotid gland?
-CN IX descends down jugular foramen and sends branch into skull from middle ear to form the tympanic plexus
In middle cranial fossa - the lesser petrosal nerve runs out the foramen oval and comes out with V3 where it passes through otic ganglion synapse then auriculotemporal goes into the parotid gland
What are 6 branches of the facial nerve?
- temporal
- zygomatic
- buccal
- mandibular
- cervical
- posterior auricular
What lies under the parotid gland?
parotid bed
what structures are the parotid bed made of?
- posterior border of mandibular ramus
- styloid process of temporal bone
- sternocleidomastoid muscle
- masseter
- stylohyoid and post. posterior belly of digastric
What can cause iatrogenic paralysis of the muscles of facial expression ( drooping of right side of face)?
misplaced local anaesthetic injection
what are the attachment sites of the temporals muscle?
- ORIGIN-Inferior temporal line
- INSERTION-coronoid process of mandible
what is the arterial supply of the temporal muscle?
- deep temporal arteries from maxillary artery
- branches from superficial temporal artery
what is the nerve supply to the temporalis muscle?
temporal branches of the mandibular division of CN V3
