Blood supply to head Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is endocarditis?
Infection of the cardiac valves
what is bacteraemia?
Bacteria in bloodstream
What are the 3 branches of the aorta?
- brachiocephalic trunk
- left common carotid artery
- left subclavian artery
What does the brachiocephalic trunk split into?
Right common carotid artery and right subclavian artery
What nerve runs over the brachiocephalic trunk?
phrenic nerve
What does the thyrocervical trunk split into?
thyroid gland and neck
What does the common carotid split into?
internal and external carotid artery
What route does the internal carotid take?
Stays within the carotid sheath and goes into the cranium
What route does the external carotid take?
Leaves carotid sheath and stays external to cranium
What does the superior and inferior thyroid artery supply?
supplies superior and inferior thyroid gland
What is the swollen part of the internal carotid called?
carotid sinus
What route does the vertebral arteries take?
Passes through transverse foramen in vertebrates into the cranium via foreman magnum
What does the internal carotid and vertebral arteries form?
Circle of willis
What are the 8 branches of the external carotid artery?
Superior thyroid Ascending pharyngeal Lingual Facial Occipital Posterior auricular Maxillary Superficial temporal
What artery supplies the teeth and what is this a branch of?
inferior alveolar artery and it is one of the 1st branches o the maxillary artery
What are the two divisions of the retromandibular vein?
anterior and posterior
What does the posterior division of the retromandibular vein and the posterior auricular vein join to make?
External jugular vein
What does the anterior division of the retromandibular vein and the facial vein join to make?
Common facial vein
What drains the cranial cavity?
Dural venous sinuses
How is endocarditis caused?
- dental origin bacteria
- travels through bloodstream
- reaches (susceptible) heart valve
- causes bacterial endocarditis
- can damage heart valve
- leads to heart murmur
- can lead to heart failure
