Pharmacokinetics Flashcards
Pharmacokinetics definition
what the body does to the drug
Pharmacodynamics definition
what the drug does to the body
ADME
Absorption
Distribution
Metabolism
Excretion
Absorption/Administration
Oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular and other routes like patches and inhalers
bioavailability definition
the fraction of administered dose that reaches systemic circulation
First - pass effect
Oral drugs have less bioavailability as it has to go through the GI tract and is filtered through the liver before getting into the systemic blood stream
Distribution meaning
drugs in the systemic circuit need to move from intravascular space to extravascular space to reach the target
Metabloism
Can be metabolised to be inactive or more active, largly via hepatic metabolism (liver)
Excretion
Urine, fecec, sweat, breast milk, mainly through kidneys
