What are the causes of peritonitis?
Infection- perforation of GI tract, disruption of peritoneum, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
Non-infectious- leakage of sterile body fluids, sterile abdominal surgery
What are the features of peritonitis?
Severe abdo pain- worse on movement, going over bumps
Abdo rididity
Rebound tenderness
Fever
What is the management of peritonitis?
IV antibiotics
Laparotomy
What is spontaneous bacterial peritonitis?
Infection of ascitic fluid that cannot be attributed to any other cause
Who gets spontaneous bacterial peritonitis?
Those with ascites
What is the most common causative organism of SBP>
E. coli
What are the features of SBP?
Abdo pain, rebound tenderness
Fever
N&V, diarrhoea
What investigations ar done for SBP?
Paracentesis- neutrophils >250
What is the management of SBP?
Antibiotics- ciprofloxacin
Large vlume paracentesis
When is SBP prevented?
Ascites with protein <15= give preventative ciprofloxacin
