Herniation of mucosa nd submucosa through muscular layer of colon wall, creating diverticular pouches
Where is commonly affected in diverticular disease?
Sigmoid colon due to small diameter
What are the risk factors for diverticular disease?
Low dietary fibre
>50yo
What are the features of diverticular disease?
Asymptomatic
LLQ abdo pain and tenderness
Bloating
Constipation
How is diverticular disease managed?
Dietary modification and fibre supplemetation
What are the complications of diverticular disease?
Diverticulitis Bleeding Infection Abscess Perforation Fistula formation Obstruction
What is diverticulitis?
Inflammation of diverticular pouch
What are the features of diverticulitis?
Sudden onset lower abdominal pain
Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation
What investigations are done for diverticulitis?
CT
Colonoscopy
What is the management of diverticulitis?
Analgesia
Oral antibiotics
Dietary modofication
What is the management of bleeding in diverticulitis?
Endoscopic haemostasis/embolisation
Surgery
What is the management of recurrent diverticulitis?
Elective surgery
