What is infective endocarditis?
Microbial infection of the endocardium.
Left sided most common - Strptococci affects abnormal valves.
Right sided in IV drug use - S.aureus affects normal valves
What is Peri-/myo-/endo-cariditis?
When the layers of the heart become inflamed
What are signs of infective carditis?
As with heart failure and sepsis plus finger clubbing, splinter haemorrhages, Janeway lesions, Osler’s nodes, Roth’s spots
What is Pericarditis and Myocarditis?
Inflammation involving the heart sac or heart muscle
What are the causes of peri/myocarditis?
infection, uraemia, carcinoma, MI, post-surgery/drug use, connective tissue disease, radiation, idiopathic
Signs and symptoms of peri/myocarditis
chest pain, heart failure
what is the the treatment for peri-/myo-/endo-carditis?
anti-inflammatory drugs
