What is the cervical screening test?
Smear test - every 3 years from age 25-49. Every 5 years from 49-64. View cervix and take sample of cells.
What is HPV?
Human Papilloma Virus.
STI, no symptoms, thought to be the main cause of CIN and therefore cervical cancer
What do smear tests, test for?
Cervical Intra-Epithelial Neoplasia (CIN)
Cervical carcinoma
Endocervical polyps
What is Cervical Intra-Epithelial Neoplasia (CIN)?
Micropscopic lesion that affects the cervix that could potentially develop into cervical cancer if left untreated.
What are Endocervical Polyps?
Usually presents with ‘spotting’.
Bening lesions, can be removed by hysterectomy
Describe Cervical Carcinoma
Abnormal cells and invasion of cervix. Can present with intra-menstrual and post-coital bleeding.
Whats the treatment for Cervical carcinoma?
Depends on stage either local excision or radical hysterectomy +/- chemoradiotherapy
What is menorrhagia?
Heavy periods caused by dysfunctional uterine bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, or polyps.
What are fibroids?
Very common benign tumours. Arise from myometrium (uterine muscular wall). Can present with heavy or painful periods, pelvic pain or distension.
What causes Endometritis and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?
Caused by infections, usually STI. Can present with abnormal discharge, pain or bleeding. Can be asymptomatic and is a major cause of infertility.
What is endometritis?
Endometrial tissue in the wrong location i.e. outside the endometrium. Very common benign condition. Can present with heavy or painful period, pelvic pain, painful sex.
Whats the treatment for endometritis?
COCP, Mirena, Zoladex, Surgery
What are endometrial polyps?
Benign growth from endometrial cavity
What is endometrial cancer?
Cancer of the lining of the uterus. Often presents as post menopausal bleeding and so detected early.
What are risk factors for endometrial cancer?
Nulliparity (infertility), high BMI, HRT and late menopause
