Pearson chapter 29 Flashcards
abscess
a pocket of pus (white blood cells and cellular debris) in the tissues.
ankylosing spondylosis
a form of arthritis of the spine, more common in men, in which the affected vertebrae can fuse.
cellulitis
inflammation of the skin, including the dermis and subcutaneous layers, usually caused by bacterial infection
decubitus ulcers
bedsores; pressure sores
fascia
inelastic fibrous tissue that surrounds each muscle compartment
gangrene
the death of tissue; tissue necrosis.
gas gangrene
tissue necrosis associated with gas-producing bacteria
gout
arthritis caused by uric acid crystals deposited in a joint.
hyperkyphosis
an exaggeration of the normal curvature of the thoracic spine.
kyphosis
abnormal convex curvature of the thoracic spine that can cause a hunchback appearance
myoglobin
the pigment in the muscle that can bind with oxygen
necrotizing fasciitis
a rapidly spreading infection of fascia, with tissue death and separation of tissues from the fascia.
osteoarthritis
an age-related degenerative joint disease with loss of articular cartilage.
osteoporosis
the loss of bone density resulting in fragile bones.
pathologic fractures
a bone that is broken with little force because of a diseased state of the bone.
rhabdomyolysis
the breakdown of skeletal muscle.
sciatica
neuralgia (nerve pain) of the sciatic nerve of the lower extremity.
Arthritis
inflammation of a joint
Bursitis
nflammation of synovial fluid–filled sacs that protect
tissues adjacent to joints
Osteopenia
Decrease in bone mass, occurs with aging
osteosarcoma
Bone cancers, Ewing’s sarcoma
Muscular dystrophies
genetic diseases result in
abnormalities of structural and functional muscle proteins,
progressive muscle degeneration and weakness
Fibromyalgia
hronic inflammatory disease of the musculoskeletal
system
