MOD 4 Flashcards
arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein with a high risk for bleeding.
aura
an abnormal sensation that precedes some seizures and migraine headaches, and may involve any of the senses.
epilepsy
a neurologic disorder in which there are recurrent seizures
excited delirium syndrome (ExDS)
an acute state of confusion accompanied by combative or aggressive behavior, insensitivity to pain, and unusual strength; may be provoked by use of cocaine or methamphetamine, as well as other causes, and can result in sudden death
generalized seizures
seizure activity involving the entire cerebrum and can result in loss of consciousness.
ischemic stroke
an obstruction of blood flow to a portion of the brain.
meningismus
signs reflective of inflammation of the meninges; includes headache, photophobia, and stiff neck.
partial seizures
abnormal neuronal discharge localized to a single area of the brain
photophobia
hypersensitivity of the eyes to light
postictal
the period of altered mental status following a seizure
status epilepticus
a sustained tonic–clonic seizure (greater than five minutes) or successive tonic–clonic seizures without an intervening period of consciousness.
subarachnoid hemorrhage
bleeding between the brain and the arachnoid layer of the meninges
tonic–clonic seizures
motor activity produced by a generalized neuronal discharge in the brain involving a state of rigid contraction of the muscles (tonic phase) followed by rhythmic muscle contractions (clonic phase).
transient ischemic attack (TIA)
an interruption of blood flow to a portion of the brain that lasts for less than one hour
vertigo
a subjective sensation of spinning or moving while stationary; dizziness.
