Pearson chapter 27 Flashcards
Anaphylactoid reaction
A life threatening reaction to a substance that presents with signs and symptoms similar to anaphylaxis but that is not mediated by the immune globulin IgE
Anaphylaxis
a life threatening allergic reaction that produces shock through vasodilation and fluid shifts, with the potential for asphyxia
Angioedema
Dialation and increased permebility of blood vessels within the tissues that produce swelling
Antibodies
Immunoglobulins; substances synthesized by the immune system that can recognize specific foreign materials in the body and can initiate a specific immune response against them
Antigens
any substances recognized by the body as foreign, or “not self”
Autoimmune disease
Conditions in which the immune system fails to recognize some of the bodies molecules as its own, resulting in an immune response against the body’s own tissues.
Urticaria
red, raised areas on the skin caused by a swelling of, and release of of fluid from, blood vessels in the skin in response to an allergic reaction. Commonly known as hives
