What is secreted by the anterior pituitary?
trophic and non-trophic hormones
Trophic: TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH
Non-trophic: GH and Prolactin
What does the posterior pituitary consist of?
An extension of neural tissue consisting of modified glial cells and axonal processes
What does the posterior pituitary secrete?
ADH (vasopressin) and oxytocin
What syndrome can anterior pituitary adenoma be related to?
Werner syndrome (MEN1 gene)
What is the most common functional tumour of the pituitary?
prolactinoma
Does pituitary hypofunction affect individual hormones?
no rarely
What is Craniopharyngioma derived from?
remnants of Rathke’s pouch
What are symptoms of carniopharyngioma?
Headaches and visual disturbances
Children may have growth retardation
