What is the subject of a sentence?
A noun phrase about which something is stated or asked
What is the difference between a simple and complete subject?
Simple- only main noun or noun substitute (dog)
Complete- simple subject with modifiers (the large dog)
What governs the number of the verb?
The number (singular/plural) of the subject
What is the predicate of the sentence?
A verb or verb phrase
What is the difference between a simple and complete predicate?
Simple- Only complete verb (chased)
Complete- says something about subject, has verb and complements or modifiers (chased after the cat)
What are Modifiers?
A word or group of words that describe or qualify another word or group of words
What are single word modifiers?
adverbs and adjectives
What are Complements?
- completers of thought
- completes the sense of the verb, subject, or object
What are possible Complements?
- direct object
- indirect object
- subject complements (predicate noun/adjectives)
- object complements
What does the Direct object and Subject complement answer?
What? or Whom? after the verb
Where does the Direct object come in a sentence?
comes after an action verb
What are Subject complements and where do they come in a sentence?
- predicate noun/adjectives
- follows linking verbs
Where does an Indirect object come in a sentence?
comes between the action verb and direct object
What does an Indirect object answer?
To/for what? or whom?
Where does an Object complement come in a sentence and what does it answer?
- After the direct object
- Answers whom? or what?
