Parathyroid Flashcards
What do the parathyroids do?
Secrete PTH which makes you pull Ca from the bone and put it in the blood so serum Ca goes up
Too much PTH = ___ serum Ca
Increase
Too little PTH = serum Ca ___
Decrease
HyperPTH= HyperCa= ____
HYPOphosphatemia
Hyperparathyroidism=hypercalcemia=hypophosphatemia
Too much PTH so serum Ca is increased…Sedated or not enough sedation?
Sedated!
Hyperparathyroidism=hypercalcemia=hypophosphatemia
Serum phosphorous?
Decreased
Hyperparathyroidism
Partial parathyroidectomy–when you take out 2 of the parathyroids…This will cause PTH secretion to decrease or increase?
Decrease
What do you monitor post op of partial parathyroidectomy?
Monitor HYPOcalcemia (not enough sedation)
*tight, rigid muscles..can progress to tetany
Hypoparathyroidism= ? = ?
Hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia
Hypoparathyroidism
Not enough ___
PTH
Hypoparathyroidism
Serum ca ___
Decrease
Hypoparathyroidism
Serum phosphorous is ____
Increased
Hypoparathyroidism
Sedated or not sedated?
NOT sedated
Hypoparathyroidism
Tx–IV ___
Calcium
Hypoparathyroidism
Why gives phosphorus binding drug?
Binds to phosphorous so not as much phosphorus in blood means calcium goes up
