Burns Flashcards
Where do most burns occur?
In home
After a burn, why does plasma seep into tissue?
Increased capillary permeability
*vessels are leaking because they are damaged by heat of burn; can go to fluid volume deficit or shock!!
When does the majority of capillary leaking occur?
First 24 hours
Why does the pulse increase?
Anytime you are in fluid volume deficit, HR increases
Why does cardiac output decrease?
Less volume to pump out
Why does UO decrease?
Kidneys either trying to hold on to fluid or they aren’t being perfused adequately
Why is epinephrine secreted?
Makes you vasoconstrictor and shunts blood to vital organs
Anytime systolic BP drops below ____ the client will not have adequate tissue perfusion?
Below 90
Why are ADH and aldosterone secreted?
Retain Na and H20 with aldosterone
Retain H20 with ADH
to help blood volume go back up!
What is the most common airway injury?
Carbon monoxide poisoning
If client has carbon monoxide poisoning the client is ___
Hypoxic –treat with 100% O2
T/F: Can rely on pulse ox for O2 reading if suspected carbon dioxide poisoning
F—pulse ox just can tell if something is bound to Hgb. So carbon monoxide binds to Hgb just like O2 but does it at much faster rate–therefore, more carbon monoxide is bound to the Hgb instead of O2 but pulse Ox reading shows normal
When you see a client with burns to neck/face/chest you need to think ___
Airway
What might the primary healthcare provider do prophylactically with neck/face/chest burns?
Intubate
What to do first: intubate or trach?
Intubate!! Least invasive first
